I so love the scent of the steam and the quiet that ensues when I'm ironing.
(It's a very good time to problem solve, daydream,
or contemplate where each item came from.)
Great Aunts.... dear friends.... jumble sales.... antique shops.
Despite the danger of fraying and wear
they are routinely used, washed, and ironed.
Better to be pressed into service than languish in a drawer or trunk,
their beauty never seen or enjoyed.
The more mundane towels are left out and at hand,
ready for dish-drying or cleanups.
ready for dish-drying or cleanups.
There is a lovely satisfaction that comes from indulging
in all those relatively mindless tasks
in all those relatively mindless tasks
that leave me feeling I've actually accomplished something.

Well you know that I know what you mean! I love the pleasures of ironing. What a beautiful pile you have produced. So nice seeing your lovely linen! I hope you have a lovely Easter weekend!
ReplyDeleteAnd you, too, Jacqueline! Hoping your Easter weekend was lovely. I knew you would appreciate the lure of the iron. I have tablecloths waiting for me this weekend.
DeleteIroning these lovely old towels, makes a Mindfullness Meditation, for you! You are relaxed in the quiet moment... Doing the repetitive motion of ironing... Back and forth, back and forth. And your mind is absorbed in the history of each vintage towel, and whatever story it has to tell.
ReplyDeleteLovely....
Tessa~
It's so true, Tessa. I have always loved repetitive tasks. I think that's why I love spinning wool, too. The wheel is positively hypnotic! (And I have praticed mindfulness! In fact I've attended sessions where we were guided in mindful eating.)
DeleteAs well as it's lovely, that you use them!!!
ReplyDeleteTessa~
Yes! they all get used. Some are the worse for it, but I think it's sad not to handle them.
DeleteI am only doing one being Holiday dinner now, I will miss ( the only thing I will miss) is ironing the table cloth and the napkins I have 4 different toile pattern napkins ( 16) to do and I will miss that quiet time in the sewing room. Enjoy your quiet time.......
ReplyDeletePreparing for guests and a nice dinner is always one of my favorite things to do. Choosing the china, the napkins, the cutlery and glassware. Deciding which serving dishes look nicest with your choices. It's like putting a still life together! (One that will get very, very soiled!!)
Deleteoops! big holiday not being.....
ReplyDeleteA beautiful collection! I too love using mine, but do have an unused set from my Great Grandmother... you are right, the should be used, enjoyed! Maybe I will get brave!!
ReplyDeleteHugs & Happy Easter,
Bella
Happy Easter to you, too, Bella! I hope you had a lovely time last weekend. I sometimes hold back a few precious items, but in the end I usually end up using them and am glad for it.
